It's not plastic-coated which I think is kinda tacky. I also realized that the messenger style is better than the tote style. Because of the upright tulip-shape of the Sling Tote, it is higher than it is wider so to be able to use more of the space, your baby items have to be on top of each other. The messenger style of this bag makes it easier to organize your baby's things side by side and you'll be able to see everything at once, because you don't have to pile them on top of each other like you have to do with the Sling Tote.
